Besides the example of the sanskrit language, it should also be noted that every indigenous Indian religion--Hinduism, Budhism, Jainism, Sikhism--has originated from North India. I personally visited Jain caves in Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu, and these would clearly not have existed without the fact that Jainism originated in the North and then spread in South India.
