Regarding Kemal Ataturk Empty Regarding Kemal Ataturk

Post  Guest Tue Jun 10, 2014 3:08 pm

I was talking to a Turkish colleague at my workplace and the subject veered around towards Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of Modern Turkey. Ataturk is a fascinating figure because he played the central role in modernizing Turkey and modernizing Turkish Islam. Turkish as a language is distinct from arabic and persian. The mughal Emperor Babur wrote his autobiography in Turkish (albeit in the Chaghatai Turkish dialect). I would have imagined Turkish script to be similar to arabic or persian script and i asked my colleague whether you write turkish from right to left. And what he said amazed me. He said in accordance with the several reforms introduced by Ataturk in the 1920's Turkish is written in the roman alphabet like english. This was one of the ways Ataturk hoped to bring Turkey closer to Europe.
I told my colleague that we need people like Ataturk in India and he laughed and said in Turkey we say that men like Ataturk come once in a hundred years but since India has such a large population it is expected that great men would come by more frequently.
