staying up

Post  WillyNilly on Fri May 17, 2013 6:34 am

i've been staying up late tonight, listening to the pandit's vocal music for the last three hours. i had been searching for his music on youtube for a few years, and nearly given up hope. finally, tonight, i found several compositions that someone had posted.

he was not keen to record his music, and more interested in giving live performances, of which i attended a few, many years ago in new york city. he was born in lahore in 1937, and died in berkeley, ca, in the late 90s.

i hope that his music, of the kirana gharana, i think, is kept alive by his disciples, nearly all of whom are americans. the music i heard tonight brought back many fond memories. i'll post a link or two to the music soon.

i was writing about pandit pran nath of lahore of undivided india, dehra dhun, new york city, and berkeley, ca.

biography: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pran_Nath_(musician)

a long piece (33 min) in raag shuddh sarang: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObQTRjEP4mM

short piece (10 min) in raag darbari: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Avf-hXGn9Zo

this is rare music, partly because it was not produced or disseminated commercially, and because pran nath was largely a recluse. i'm delighted that we can now listen to it on youtube.

Thanks for the links. I will listen to the videos when I am in the mood. Did you notice that Carnatic classical consists almost entirely of religious music while Hindustani classical consists of both religious and secular music.
