Remembering Jaspal Bhatti Empty Remembering Jaspal Bhatti

Jaspal Bhatti, who died recently, was one of the finest comedians in recent times. What made him stand out from other comedians was that his humor often took the form of social satire--poking fun at the powers that be in a clever and genuinely funny way. I give below some of his many antics:

Jaspal Bhatti takes to horses after fuel price hike

Chandigarh, June 5 (IANS) Satirist Jaspal Bhatti Thursday rode on horseback to protest the latest fuel price hike. Demanding that the government set up separate horse lanes on the lines of the failed bus rapid transport (BRT) lanes in New Delhi and Pune, Bhatti said people should now patronise horses and donkeys as high prices had put fuel beyond their reach.

He also sought special training for traffic policemen to control horses and donkeys on the roads.

And to drive home the point of expensive gas cylinders, Bhatti’s wife Savita Bhatti and a couple of other ladies pedalled a ‘Murli Mobile Tandoor’ on a rickshaw. The ‘tandoor’ (earthen oven) is named after Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, who announced the fuel price hike Wednesday.

“We have full sympathy with the government, which had no other option but to increase the petrol, diesel and LPG prices. But before hiking the gas prices the petroleum ministry could have launched the ‘Murli Mobile Tandoors’ to help people make rotis in a door-to-door service,” Bhatti said.

Savita Bhatti and other ladies took the tandoor door to door in a sector here. Bhatti said this was done to help the poor people, who did not know how they would afford costlier cooking gas.

Bhatti also demanded that horse maintenance allowance be given to government officers and employees for using horses.

“Horses are eco-friendly also,” he added.

Bhatti's spoof: Santa gifts onions on Christmas

Chandigarh: Comedian-actor Jaspal Bhatti in his unique satirical style on Wednesday engaged the services of two Santa Claus' to buy onions to give as gifts this Christmas as the vegetable is getting out of common man's reach due to its "exorbitant price".

"Common man will be much happier getting onions as gifts as the skyrocketing price of the vegetable has made it unaffordable for public," he said while buying the vegetable along with the Santas at a market here.

"Though, of course, we would be able to gift a very small sized onion to only a limited number of families," he said.

He appealed to all Santa Claus' to hide onions in ladies purses and stockings hung in homes to spread happiness during the Christmas.

He also appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to get himself into the Santa costume and start delivering onions to common man.

Explaining how he was able to buy the onions at such an "exorbitant price", he said, "We have got funds from those involved in big scams like 2G allocation and others. You will get to know about the funding agencies through Wikileaks shortly."

Chandigarh: If you're raking your brains over what to gift this Christmas, then take a tip from Jaspal Bhatti. Accompanied by a group of boys and girls dressed as Santa Claus, the comedian-actor distributed onions among people at the fruit and vegetables market here Wednesday.

"This is the most expensive gift that we can give to people this Christmas. We have selected the bigger onions for the VIPs while the smaller ones are for the common man," Bhatti told IANS.

Bhatti, who was accompanied by students of his MAD Arts School here, later presented a garland of vegetables, including onions, to his wife, Savita Bhatti.

They later sang a Christmas carol - a satire on the rising prices of onions and other vegetables of daily need.

"Onions can cheer up the common man more than chocolates can children. I appeal to all the Santa Claus of India to put onions in ladies' purses and stockings hung in homes to spread happiness around X-mas and the New Year," Bhatti said with tongue firmly in cheek.

Bhatti also appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to get into Santa Claus's costume and start delivering onions to the common man.

Asked from where he was getting the money to buy onions at the prevailing exorbitant prices, he said: "We have got funding from those involved in the 2G scam. You will get to know about the funding agencies through WikiLeaks shortly."

Bhatti appealed to the police chief in Mumbai to provide him security cover while purchasing onions since there was a threat to anyone who possesses onions.
