eight to ten years...

Post  WillyNilly on Tue Oct 23, 2012 1:51 am

...that's what the prosecution is asking the judge for, in the case of rajat gupta, the former managing director of mckinsey & co., an ex-director on the board of goldman sachs and p & g, and iit alumnus.

gupta and his defence team are hoping to plead for no jail time at all, but only community service and other non-jail penalties (what could they be? baking the judge a batch of cookies each day with his own hands?)

gupta's wife and three daughters are going to sob again in open court, as they did when the jury decided that the man was guilty, and as dharun ravi's mother did in new jersey. why can't these people stop putting their tear glands and ducts to so much use and take responsibility for their own actions?

take a guess on the sentence. my guess: a minimum of four years in jail. i understand that daal and roti are not served for lunch or din-din in u.s. jails.

sentencing is this wednesday. i'll try to keep you informed.

i understand that bill gates and others have written to the judge asking for clemency for gupta. they say gupta has done a lot of charitable and philanthropic work and so should be dealt with leniently.

i don't think gupta will be granted clemency; that will be viewed as unequal treatment. indeed, wealthy and prominent people are often made to pay harsher-than-average, exemplary penalties.

listen to gupta's daughter - one of four - complain:

ms. gupta whines

it looks as if the judge - one mr. rakoff - cannot be relied upon to follow the sentencing guidelines of eight to ten years in prison; so there's a possibility that gupta will receive a light sentence.

an informative article on gupta's sentence:

speculation on the sentence

former judges now say that the letters from prominent people on behalf of gupta is likely to have an effect on judge rakoff who doesn't like federal guidelines, and that gupta will probably be sentenced to two to four years in jail.

gupta's wife says that he has not spoken ill of "those who betrayed his trust." who betrayed his trust? how?

the people who betrayed gupta's trust and squeaked on him because of which he is now in jail?

mrs gupta may have been referring to rajaratnam who must have revealed incriminating info about gupta when he was charged. rajaratnam must have done so under pressure from the prosecution, so i don't see how his revelation can be called betrayal.

the sentencing hearing is at 2:00 pm. if gupta gets any jail term he may get taken to jail directly from the court. on the other hand, the judge can allow him to stay at home during the appeal process, which can take as long as a year. that's unlikely because of the possibility of his escaping to india or some other country.

of one thing, one can be sure: five indian women will visibly shed tears in a u.s. court today. four daughters? in this day and age?

as of a minute ago, i haven't seen any new info on rajat gupta's sentence, in response to my google searches. apparently, the hearing is still on, and has been on for about 1.5 hours, assuming that it started promptly at 2:00 pm est.

recent news:

23:58 Rajat Gupta trial all set to begin:
Former Goldman Sachs Director Rajat Gupta entered in court building in New York at around 1:45 pm, where his trial is all set to begin. He allowed photographers to take his pictures, while telling his lawyer that they were just doing their jobs.

[this is from rediff. the time stamp above must be based on indian time.]

Gupta has been sentenced to 2 years in prison. i have a question: why 11 years to Rajaratnam and 2 years for Gupta? is it because Gupta did not directly benefit from the inside information?

yes, just heard that. i don't think that's the reason; it must be because of his "contributions to society," and potential to do good.
